Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several conversations following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener said any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
