The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, aside from his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
