The artist has given the entirety of his £25k Mercury Prize winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to save the Britain's grassroots concert spaces.

Fender was given the prize on mid-October as his latest record his work was named the outstanding release of the last 12 months.

He has chosen to donate the funds to the trust, in appreciation of the vital role small stages fulfilled in his initial steps.

"I personally couldn't be pursuing this success if it wasn't for all the shows I did around the area, and further afield, when I was starting out," remarked the artist. "These venues are renowned, but they are struggling."

From early 2023 onward, at least 150 of these venues have shut down – about 16% of the whole industry in the UK.

Recently, major artists such as Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the MVT in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by including a small levy to their ticket costs, which supports independent venues.

He also participated, generating over £100k on his 2024 arena tour to support 38 grassroots venues across the UK.

The money assisted spaces that were facing potential shutdown due to challenges arising from flooding, blazes and bereavements, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and sound issues.

Additional spaces received financial assistance in upgrading amenities and technical equipment that positively impacted performers and audiences.

"The concept that funds from concerts in major spaces helps the independent spots, where it all starts for artists like me, is just common sense," the star has stated.

The musician is among several artists to give his honor prize money to good deeds.

In 2002, artist she split her bounty across multiple organizations, including the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.

"And I gave a £1,000 to the center, to their gymnastics class, because I practiced gymnastics when I was a child and they lacked better apparatus," she shared with the media.

In recent years, they donated their prize money to the local youth club that nurtured their act, alongside other independent music bodies.

Additionally the 1994 recipients M People contributed their award to a MS organization after a close contact was found to have the illness.

"Receiving the award was sufficient," remarked artist Small. "The prize was the cherry on top but we could do without the extra, because we had the cake. So our victory impacted the lives of others."

In the past week, the trust announced it had protected several small stages in south-east England, by transferring them to community ownership.

One venue in the city and the second in Bristol were bought under the Own Our Venues initiative, which is backed by the arts council and enthusiasts who acquire "shares" in the venues.
