Resurgent Medvedev Wins First Trophy in Over Two Years

19 of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one championships have been achieved on hard courts

A comeback Medvedev secured his initial championship for over two years with a win over Corentin Moutet in the Almaty Open championship match.

Medvedev, a former top-ranked player, has endured a torrid period, managing just a single victory at the big events and undergoing a setback at the US Open.

The player's inconsistency on the tennis tour - and difficulties with his serving in especial - caused him dropping out of the top ten and eventually parting ways with long-term coach Gilles Cervara.

Currently working with Johansson and his other coach, he has consistently improved in the recent weeks - culminating in a closely contested 7-5 4-6 6-3 victory over opponent Moutet.

This represents the player's initial championship since the Italian tournament and first on a hard surface from March of 2023.

The win also signifies Medvedev has secured 21 titles at 21 various events.

"This marks the first occasion I am participating in a competition with my children at once, so to win a title is really nice," said tennis professional the champion.

"This victory is in honour of my second daughter Victoria, because the first title I won when my first daughter Alisa was born was for her."

Medvedev, the former major winner, had lost his last six finals, including in that event earlier this year.

Medvedev's counter-punching approach and frequent emotional displays on the playing surface had led observers to doubt if his capacity to compete at the top level was concluded.

But the player has implemented adjustments in the past month, attempting to approach the net and perform positively, backed up by an improved serving game.

The champion fought back from a disadvantage in the first set against the tricky Moutet, securing four of the last five games to go ahead.

The pair traded service breaks in the second set before Moutet, bidding for his first professional title, seized the initiative to force a final set.

Moutet saved four initial break points in a close deciding set before the champion won the break to that score to close out the victory.

Suitably, he earned the win with a rally at the net, with Moutet incapable to manage a volley after two hours and 38 minutes.
