The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
