The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to block the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Broader Implications
The legal battle represents the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential further challenges.
